Has anyone seen the Rocky Horror Picture Show live in theatre?

I went for the first time last night, thinking that everyone was going to be enjoying it, but the audience was mocking it aloud in unison with pre-written insults! They said vulgar things. Have the midnight shows always been about making fun of the movie or is this just a recent thing?

Damn it, Janet! That's what they're supposed to do. The movie's kind of dumb, if you really think about it. It's supposed to be about having fun, so the fans got really into it, pointed out all its flaws, and at midnight showings, they go all out and interact. I went to one. We all did The Time Warp.

Wow - that's the whole point. I hope this was a joke question, otherwise whomever took you is really really mean.
Yep I've gone to it. What you describe is not a "recent thing" it has been around for a number of years. Try not to be so sensitive towards a film, documentaries excluded.
i was deviginized at 23 but i swore i was 18. hahaha... unfortunately for me i had three friends who were cast, so i got to go up on stage and help deliver a baby covered in orange jello while a mormon minister and a pro abortion guy fought over keep it or kill it. it was fun, everyone heckles and cheers. you're supposed to get into it. it is a scripted event in which the same theme is never repeated. try again another night and make sure you dress up. just go with the flow.
I only went once, but in line I had a giant V written on my forehead in red lipstick by some random cast member and engaged in a corn tortilla fight with other audience members prior to the start of the show. We also, as you mentioned, shouted pre-written insults at the screen and used other items which were given to us on our way in. It was awesome.
its just a recent thing....Rocky Horror Picture Show is the best thing ever made...
It has always been this way. I went in the 80's and it was the same. In fact., local theaters have stopped showing it because of the unruly crowds.
Stay away from those ridiculous shows.
! Quit!!!
